Learner drivers in category B (cars) with permits issued after April 4th 2011 will have to undergo the Essential Driver Training (EDT) course.
The EDT course involves taking 12 one hour lessons and keeping a log book. EDT lessons cover from starting to drive to pre test driving. At the end of the course the learner may attempt the driving test. A learner, whose permit was issued after April 4th 2011 will not be allowed attempt the driving test without completing the course and showing a completed log book.
The course can only be delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) registered with the Road Safety Authority (RSA). The ADI will stamp the learner's logbook after every EDT lesson. The learner may get extra driving lessons if they wish. This may be necessary if the learner has difficulty getting a car to practise in after each EDT lesson.
Full details of the course can be found on the RSA website http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Learner-Drivers/Driver-Training/Car-Training-EDT/I-do-not-hold-a-permit/ .
tuitionireland.com can currently offer the EDT course in Athlone, Birr, Tullamore, Portlaoise and surrounding areas. The tuition vehicle used for the first lessons is a new Opel Corsa with dual controls. Intending learner drivers can rest assured of careful route selection and patient instruction.
